GFX Morning Commentary February 9th, 2012

Good Morning,

Today's expected range for the Canadian Dollar against the US Dollar is .9920-1.0020

Today's expected range for the Canadian Dollar against the Euro is 1.3190-1.3230

Today's expected range for the Canadian Dollar against Sterling is 1.5800-1.5900

The US Dollar has had a busy night against the Euro and at the moment is back to where we closed it in Toronto yesterday,  it did trade as high 1.3315 on the expectation that the Greek coalition parties would agree a set of austerity measures that would satisfy the IMF and EU officials and allow the money to flow to them. This morning it was announced that they in fact have not reached a consensus on a new austerity program and this is after they put out much rhetoric yesterday saying that they were close to a deal., Euro quickly dropped from its highs and traded down to  the 1.3250 level. I was of the understanding that the EU finance ministers were meeting today in Brussels and wanted a deal done ahead of that meeting., the markets will now await the reaction of the EU and IMF and if they come out and say that it is over and no more money will flow to Greece look for the Euro to get hit hard and EURO.USD could easily trade below the 1.3000 level.

Also making headlines today were the interest rate announcements from the Bank of England and the European Central Bank. The BOE has announced that interest rates will remain at 0.5% and they as expected  increased their quantitative easing program by 50 Billion Pounds, the minutes from this meeting get released but they are not expected to have any good news on the economy, The ECB  will release later this morning and they are not expected to change their 1.0% interest rate level, at 8:30 this morning ECB Governor Mario Draghi will give his press conference and he will have to answer lots of questions on what happens with Greece.

You have heard me say this before, markets do not like uncertainty so volatility could come back with a vengeance today.

The Canadian Dollar was a bit more active overnight but still trading in a tight range and still trading in exact correlation with the Euro, as the Euro started getting stronger USD.CAD fell back and then when the Greek news hit USD.CAD traded back higher, the Loonie  is actually very easy to trade right now as you just have to watch what the Euro is doing. If the Greek situation breaks out of control today you should see USD.CAD jump back above par and higher, while this is not certain it may be wise for US Dollar buyers to try and lock in some purchases anywhere below par to protect themselves in case this happens.

If we do see a development in the Greek situation I will send out a currency alert.

Have a great day
Mike

MORNING COMMENTARY

FX MARKET ON HOLD AHEAD OF ECB AND GREECE
The Euro is off its highs from overnight after breaching the 1.3300 level. The market is still hopeful
Greece will come to a resolution on the debt swap. The Bank of England has left their key interest rate
unchanged at 0.5% as expected, next to report is the ECB which is currently at 1.0% and are also expected
to hold at current levels. The statement to follow should provide some insight if more stimulus is required.
The Canadian dollar once again was confined to narrow ranges in what is amounting to very uneventful trading.
The economic calendar in North America is light so the focus will be on the ECB statement at 8:30am and any
headlines pertaining to Greek resolutions.
Dow futures are pointing down 14 in pre-market trading with commodities slightly firmer.

GFX Morning Commentary February 8th, 2012

Good Morning,

Today's expected range for the Canadian Dollar against the US Dollar is .9910-1.0000

Today's expected range for the Canadian Dollar against the Euro is 1.3200-1.3300

Today's expected range for the Canadian Dollar against Sterling is 1.5770-1.5900

The US Dollar is marginally weaker this morning in very thin trading conditions and narrow ranges. The Euro reached a 2-month high against the Greenback as there is now speculation that the talks between all the political parties in Greece will come up with enough austerity measures to allow the money to flow through next month, until this deal is finalised currency markets will remain quiet as traders  will not risk a wild swing on the outcome of the talks. A positive resolution and the Euro should rally a negative resolution and EURO.USD should fall back towards 1.3000.

There is not a lot to say about the Canadian dollar as yet again it had a very narrow trading range and continues to await events to play out in Europe, yesterday saw the Loonie stage a mini-rally as the Canadian building permits came in much stronger than expected and housing prices remained strong, the average home price in Toronto is now over $600k, not much chance for young people to be buying homes in the future. Between high home prices and foreign investors the Condo market in Toronto should remain strong over the medium-term helping to keep up the demand for the Canadian Dollar.

For today everything will depend on any news out of Greece which I think we will receive at some point this afternoon, ahead of that I think the CAD market will be very quiet but the equity markets are pointing slightly higher so I think the first move for USD.CAD will be lower, if we do get a resolution to Greece today I think we will see at least .9925 trade today, once again for US Dollar sellers between .9975 and 1.0000 are good levels to leaver your orders to try and get some extra value on any US Dollar pullback.

Have a great day
Mike

MORNING COMMENTARY

MARKET BETTING ON A FAVOURABLE RESOLUTION TO THE GREEK RESTRUCTURING

Stock markets climbed higher in Asia on better than expected corporate earnings from Toyota.
In Europe investor sentiment is positive with stocks gaining on hopes of a favourable resolution
to the Greek debt restructuring. Also coming into focus is tomorrows ECB meeting on interest rates
which are expected to hold at the current 1%. The Euro hit a 2 month high overnight as further
unwinding of short positions ensued ahead of the Greek announcement.
The Canadian dollar is unchanged from where we closed and was held to extremely tight ranges
overnight. Dow futures are pointing higher by 20 in pre-market with commodities holding steady.
Limited economic data in North America today will have markets on the sidelines waiting for news
on a Greek resolution. In Canada this morning we have housing starts for January.

GFX Morning Commentary February 7th, 2012

Good Morning,

Todays suggested range for the Canadian dollar against the US Dollar is .9950 – 1.0050.

Todays suggested range for the Canadian dollar against the Euro is 1.3060-1.3200

Todays suggested range for the Canadian dollar against Sterling is 1.5760-1.5900

Apologies for sending this twice we continue to have issues cutting and pasting to the blog. here it is again.
The US Dollar is marginally weaker this morning as the world's financial markets await any news out of Greece. Equity markets have stabilized in the hope that some resolution will be achieved this week and the money will be allowed to flow through for the 2nd bailout but before that happens all Greek political parties must agree another 600 million in cuts for this year or the IMF will stop the flow of funds and Greece will default.

Of interest last night was the Reserve Bank of Australia keeping its key interest rate unchanged at 4.25% where it was widely expected that they would cut rates 0.25%, the Aussie dollar soared on this development as it signaled to the markets that maybe things are not as bad as they seem. Also last night it was announced that the Central Bank of Japan was quietly intervening in the currency markets selling massive amount of yen to try and help stem the yen from appreciating, two very different central bank approaches to manipulating the value of their currency.

The Canadian dollar is marginally stronger this morning but had a very quiet night with little trading volume. We still favour a stronger Canadian dollar over the next few days but everything will depend on what happens with Greece, a resolution to the problem and USD.CAD will move towards .9900, more uncertainty and we will move towards the 1.0100 level.

or today with no major economic data due out look for a narrow trading range with USD.CAD testing paity at some point which I think represents good short-term value for US Dollar sellers.

Have a great day
Mike

EURO STEADY DESPITE GREEK UNCERTAINTIES
Europe’s single currency is holding steady despite worse than expected German industrial production and the uncertainty surrounding Greece. A lot of the downward pressure for the Euro appears limited given the market remains heavily short. Stocks and commodities are slightly lower with risk appetite waning. In a surprise move overnight the Reserve Bank of Australia left interest rates alone at 4.25% with the market widely expecting a quarter point drop. The Australian dollar following the announcement quickly gained a full cent against the USD. Meanwhile our Loonie was held to extremely tight ranges overnight with no significant economic data due out this week. Today in Canada building permits for December is the lone data, with nothing out in the U.S. Dow futures are pointing down by 20 in pre-market trading and will be watching for any headlines on the Greek debt restructuring.
