the Canadian dollar against the US Dollar 1.0910 – 1.0970
Today’s suggested range for
the Canadian dollar against the Euro is 1.5000 – 1.5100
Today’s suggested range for
the Canadian dollar against Sterling 1.8200 – 1.8300
The US Dollar is mixed
against the major currencies while making gains in the emerging markets as
anti-government protests escalate in Ukraine and Thailand.
The fall-out from the increased
political tensions has global stocks lower and U.S. Treasuries higher. The
Japanese Yen rallied for the first time in three days as Asian and European
stocks decline.
The British Pound fell
against most major currencies following an unexpected rise in the unemployment
rate to 7.2% from 7.1% for January. The Euro has eased back slightly after
making new highs for 2014 against the greenback overnight.
The Canadian dollar rallied
overnight as recent U.S. economic data continues to disappoint with much of the
blame on bad weather. It remains unclear if you strip out the weather component
on how well the U.S. economy is performing. Since the North American opening
the Canadian dollar has given back a lot of its gains as an article in the
Globe and Mail showing Canadian Natural Resources buying the Canadian natural
gas assets of Devon Energy of the U.S. for $3.1b in an all cash deal which is
USD/CAD positive. The only Canadian economic release today is wholesale sales
for December, while in the U.S. housing starts and building permits for January
are due out at 8:30am which will most likely miss estimates as a U.S. home
builders gauge yesterday showed confidence has plunged.
Dow futures are pointing
lower by 50 in pre-market with oil trading higher above $102 and gold slightly
lower.
