Today’s suggested range for the Canadian dollar against the U.S. dollar
is 1.0950 – 1.1050
Today’s suggested range for the Canadian dollar against the Euro is
1.5225 – 1.5350
Today’s suggested range for the Canadian dollar against Sterling is
1.8375 – 1.8500
The US
dollar remains weak against most major currencies ahead of the important U.S.
jobs report which is already being downplayed by several Fed officials
that bad weather is at play again. The Aussie dollar extended its gains to post
three month highs against the greenback overnight on general USD weakness.
In Europe
all the major currency pairs EUR, GBP and CHF strengthened with concern the
U.S. economy is faltering bringing into question the measured tapering by the
Fed. Tensions are renewing in Ukraine after Crimea’s parliament sets referendum
on joining Russia. Safe haven flows are giving the Swiss Franc a major boost
going into the weekend with the market shying away from the greenback.
The
Canadian dollar was confined to narrow ranges ahead of the Canadian employment
report for February which is projected to show jobs growth of between 15 – 20k
with the unemployment rate at 7%. In the U.S. the non-farm payrolls had early
estimates at 150k jobs created but as the week went on several big names were
lowering estimates to 125k. If the release shows U.S. payrolls below 100k
renewed selling pressure will ensue on the greenback. The Canadian dollar if no
big surprises in the employment report should play some catch up from overnight
as the AUD/CAD cross is back over parity.
Dow futures
are pointing up 13 but that will certainly change on the non-farm figure. Oil
has crept higher on renewed tensions in the Ukraine with gold unchanged.
